Wikipedia Blackout! Will Search Engines Show Wikipedia in SERP’s?

Wikipedia BlackoutToday on 16th Jan 2012 Wikipedia which is a largest online encyclopedia that has been evolved by tens of thousands of volunteers from all over the world over the last 11 years is going to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours.

The advance notification has been made by Sue Gardner who is a Foundation Executive Director of Wikimedia. The English-language Wikipedia will go offline worldwide at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and related legislation.

Wikipedia foundation revealed that "If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States.

The reason behind this black out is to protest anti-piracy legislation under concern in Congress, the foundation behind the well-liked community-based online encyclopaedia said in a statement.

Will Search Engines Show Wikipedia in SERP’s?

Wikipedia is one of the most popular and usable sites of internet which brings millions of visitors daily. More and more people rely on Wikipedia when it comes to search the proper information of any particular search term.

Now the question arises is that will search engine show the Wikipedia results in SERP’s as we and search engines have already got wind of the Wikipedia blackout, this is a test of smartness of all major search engines.

What actions search engines will take, what will happen when we will search for the Wikipedia results during blackout period?

As search engines are already aware with this blackout will they still show the Wikipedia results in SERP’s or we will experience the broken links while searching for the Wikipedia results or Wikipedia custom 404 page will appear?

Have all the search engines are already set to dump the Wikipedia results during the blackout period are they really this much smart and advance?

Let’s see how search engines will handle this situation? I will continually keep an eye on search results and update you how search engines managed with Wikipedia blackout period?

As expected search engines are still showing the wikipedia results for the search terms but they appear only for a second after while they are being redirected to the black out page from where you can grab holistic information about SOPA and PIPA  by clicking the learn more link.

While clicking the Learn more link will be taken to the  “SOPA and PIPA – Learn more page” and this is the only wikipedia page which appearing in this black out period.
