Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is still all about link building. It might not be like this anymore in the future as Google might be switching to be more social and semantic. However, so far they have been always use link factor as the main value. So this is how to rank on Google according to their current algorithm.
Off-Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Off-Page SEO basically is how Google consider link factor from other website to rank your site higher. Google has been doing this since they started their business.
One link = one vote. For instance, my website is A.com and your website is B.com. Inside A.com/test.html, I do have a link to B.com. In Google eyes, this link is considered to be one vote. Vote for your site to rank higher in your keyword.
Before you read my guide below, it’s highly recommended to learn basics of SEO from free websites. Just type in “off-page Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”, “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) basics”, “SEO definition” or anything you can think of in Google. Or go to forums.digitalpoint.com and learn the basics of SEO from subforum “Search Engine Optimization (SEO)” there. After you understand a bit about SEO, go back here and continue reading.
Well, there are numerous factors to be considered about links:
1. It’s not about quantity but about quality. Let’s say A.com has 1000 backlinks and B.com has 5 backlinks. If A gives a backlink to B.com, the link value will be powerful since A.com itself has high reputation among other websites. While if B.com (who only has 5 backlinks) give a backlink to A.com, the link value will be considered much less because B.com is not popular in terms of its own backlinks.
2. Anchor text in backlink is important. If you use <a href=http://www.b.com>B.com</a> as your anchor text, then you will rank higher in keyword “B.com” on Google result page. But if you use <a href=http://www.b.com>how to make money</a>, then you will rank higher in keyword “how to make money. So you need to get backlinks with your targeted keywords
3. Variation is also important. You can’t keep getting links with the same anchor text forever, Google might flag it as spam. You need to have incoming backlinks with different anchor texts. Let’s say you want to rank higher in “how to make money”, you should try to get backlinks with anchor text “make money online”, “how to make money on the internet”, “learn how to make money”, etc. Just vary the anchor texts, sometimes when you get an anchor text directly linking to your domain is also good since it’s always considered as natural backlink.
4. “rel=nofollow” also plays a very important part in SEO. If you insert code “rel=nofollow” inside the tag <a href=bla bla bla>, then the link will be not followed by Googlebot. Big sites such as Wikipedia usually already make this automatic. They make all outbound links as nofollow so it shouldn’t affect your Google rankings in your targeted keywords. However, getting backlinks from high profil sites (even if it’s nofollow) is still a good thing since it will surely boost your PR (PageRank) and thus help your sites to be found in other long-tail keywords.
Now the question is harder. How to get backlinks? If you have a super high quality website, you can expect to get natural backlinks once you have traffic. But not everybody can start a new Wikipedia if you know what I mean. These are the off-page SEO methods to help you get higher rankings faster.
